My first ever smoothie was made from only bananas and still I can remember how it tasted. Since that first sip I have been looking for more ways to introduce other fruits to my banana shake to enhance the flavor and to somehow make it seem more 'healthy'. I'm not big on using the healthy word when talking about fruit smoothies because it doesn't take long for some health guru to start spouting about the problems with increased sugar intake and destruction of nutrients when you make a smoothie from fresh fruit. Anyway enough rambling and onwards.
My Top 3 Best Banana Smoothie Recipes
1. Banana & Peanut Butter Smoothie
This one doesn't sound right but it is a little piece of heaven in a glass.
- 2 bananas peeled and sliced
- Small carton of vanilla yogurt
- 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup milk
Use frozen bananas for a thicker cooler smoothie or add an ice cube or two to your blender when making. Non fat milk and yogurt can be used for a healthier shake.
Put everything into the blender and pulse for 10seconds then on low power for 30 seconds or until smooth, that simple.
2. Banana & Strawberry Smoothie
Using the same recipe above just substitute the peanut butter for about 1/3 cup of frozen strawberries. The main advantage of this smoothie is that it will be colder and thicker if you want to use fresh bananas. I have in the past used this recipe with chunks of strawberries and bananas added to the smoothie at the end as a dessert, it's always gone done well.
3. Tropical Banana Smoothie
Sometimes living in Thailand has some great advantages! The main one for me is the abundance of fresh fruit available and at a price that allows for some experimentation. This tropical banana smoothie was whisked up after a visit to the local market at the end of the day when they stall holders had reduced the price of many of the fresh fruits
- 2 bananas
- 1 medium mango
- 1/4 fresh pineapple
- 1 cup ice
- 1 cup water
Peel the fruit and cut into small chunks and add to the blender first then add the ice and water and blend on pulse till the ice is almost crushed, then low power blend till smooth. Add a nice splash of rum to this makes a great summer drink for the garden parties.
